Nouveau Recycling...

Vancouver designer Melissa Ferreira is the guiding force behind local label Adhesif and trust me... you will have a hard time tearing yourself away from her beautiful, "one of a kind" garments.

Fashioned from vintage sweaters, old t shirts or scraps of leftover denim that Ferreira lovingly cuts open, her clothing emerges in flattering shapes as hand embroidered or silk screened shrugs, sweaters, jackets and accessories. Applique and hand-dying are some of the other techniques that further enhance the uniqueness of each piece.

While recycling is obviously in vogue today, Ferreira has been in business for the last 5 years and describes her designing style as both spontaneous and "quirky." Most recently, this talented lady has taken on the role of educator, offering insights to children at workshops where she sheds light on the art of making beautiful things from scrap!

My Epic Weekend...

I finally had a chance to head down to Epic... the "Ethical, Progressive, Intelligent Consumer" show that took place just this past weekend in Vancouver, on Sunday afternoon, curious to see what really was going on... It was a busy, bustling scene... lots of foot traffic and not just the yoga-ing, earth-conscious kitsilano yippes (hippies turned yuppy types).

Instead I noticed a great cross-section of folks... suburbanites included... keen on learning more about living a "lower-impact" lifestyle and checking out the new products and services on display - everything from a raw clothing fashion show, to green building materials and investing in ethical funds.
